International Mobile Equipment Identity
An IMEI (international mobile equipment identity) is a number unique to every mobile phone and other GSM device (including some satellite phones). The IMEI is used by the GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications: originally from Groupe Spécial Mobile) network to identify valid mobile (phone) devices therefore allowing the disabling of, for example, stolen mobile phones. For example, if a mobile phone is stolen, the owner can contact their network provider and instruct them to "ban" the stolen mobile phone, identifying it by its unique IMEI nummber. This will render the device useless in that country regardless as to whether the SIM card is changed or not. Thus, the IMEI is unique to the actual device, e.g. mobile phone, and not to the chip (e.g. SIM card). Use our handy tool above to get full details of how to report your mobile phone lost or stolen.
